24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
27 This is [he], of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 And all the people that heard [him], and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.

24 ¶ 요한의 사자들이 떠난 뒤에 그분께서 사람들에게 요한에 대하여 말씀하기 시작하시되, 너희가 무엇을 보려고 광야에 나갔느냐? 바람에 흔들리는 갈대냐?
25 그러나 너희가 무엇을 보려고 나갔느냐? 부드러운 옷을 입은 사람이냐? 보라, 화려하게 차려입고 호화롭게 사는 자들은 왕들의 뜰에 있느니라.
26 그러나 너희가 무엇을 보려고 나갔느냐? 대언자냐? 그러하다. 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 대언자보다 훨씬 더 나은 자니라.
27 기록된바, 보라, 내가 내 사자를 네 얼굴 앞에 보내노니 그가 네 앞에서 네 길을 예비하리라, 하신 말씀이 가리키는 자가 곧 이 사람이니라.
28 내가 너희에게 이르노니, 여자에게서 태어난 자들 가운데 [침례자] 요한보다 더 큰 대언자가 없도다. 그러나 [하나님]의 왕국에서 가장 작은 자가 그보다 더 크니라, 하시니라.
29 그분의 말씀을 들은 온 백성과 세리들은 요한의 침례로 침례를 받았으므로 [하나님]을 의롭다고 하되
30 바리새인들과 율법사들은 그에게서 침례를 받지 아니하였으므로 자기들을 향한 [하나님]의 계획을 거절하더라.
31 ¶ 또 [주]께서 이르시되, 그런즉 내가 이 세대 사람들을 어디에 비유할까? 그들은 무엇과 같은가?
32 그들은 마치 장터에 앉아 서로를 부르며 이르기를, 우리가 너희를 향해 피리를 불어도 너희가 춤추지 아니하였고 우리가 너희를 향해 애곡하여도 너희가 울지 아니하였다, 하는 아이들과 같도다.
33 [침례자] 요한이 와서 빵도 먹지 아니하고 포도즙도 마시지 아니하매 너희가 말하기를, 그가 마귀 들렸다, 하더니
34 사람의 [아들]이 와서 먹고 마시매 너희가 말하기를, 보라, 음식을 탐하는 자요, 포도즙을 많이 마시는 자요, 세리와 죄인들의 친구로다! 하는도다.
35 그러나 지혜는 자기의 모든 자녀들로 말미암아 의롭게 되느니라, 하시니라.
