The first section of chapter 5 starts with the Lord Jesus Christ facing a man possessed by an unclean spirit.
We will begin with verse 1.
Mark 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
At the end of chapter 4, we learned that the Lord Jesus Christ and His disciples were traveling on a ship.
There was a great storm, and the waves hit the ship.
The Lord Jesus Christ showed His deity by rebuking the wind, and there was a great calm.
Even the storm and the waves obeyed the Lord’s voice.
Nothing is too hard for Him.
Chapter 5 tells us that they all made it to the other side of the sea.
If you are saved, the Lord Jesus Christ will take you to reach the other side.
No matter what happens to your life, always remember what the scriptures say about your salvation.
The Lord Jesus Christ offers a gift of salvation to anyone who will believe on Him.
He is the one who will take you to reach the other side.
Chapter 5 tells us that the Lord Jesus Christ and disciples have reached the other side of the sea.
They arrived in the country of the Gadarenes.
Let us continue with verse 2.
Mark 5:2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
The Lord Jesus Christ and disciples left the ship.
Again, we see the word “immediately” which often appears throughout the Book of Mark.
The Lord Jesus Christ and disciples met with a man who was possessed by an unclean spirit.
God is real, and there is no doubt about that.
The unclean spirit is also real.
We are not to be ignorant about it.
Mark 5:3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
The unclean spirit possessed this man.
His living place was among the tomb.
The Bible says
… and no man could bind him.
This suggested that people have tried to bind him before with no success.
Even the chains cannot bind this man.
Mark 5:4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
This man with an unclean spirit was supernaturally strong.
He could break chains.
People even tried to tame this man, but they could not do it.
Mark 5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
This man was in the mountains and the tombs.
The Bible says he was cutting himself with stones.
The act of hurting or cutting oneself is not of natural cause.
It is demonic.
Up to this point, we can see that the man is in a state of despair.
No one seems to be able to deliver him from this demonic possession.
Let us read verse 6.
Mark 5:6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
This unclean spirit knew who the Lord Jesus Christ was.
The man possessed by an unclean spirit ran towards Him.
Mark 5:7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not
This unclean spirit, through the man, made a declaration that the Lord Jesus Christ was the Son of the most high God.
The Lord Jesus Christ was God manifest in the flesh.
This unclean spirit knew it well.
This unclean spirit knew that it would be judged and cast into hell to be tormented forever.
This unclean spirit also knew that the Lord Jesus Christ has the power to do so.
Mark 5:8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
The word of the Lord Jesus Christ has power.
He commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.
If you know your Bible, you can see that our current world is still under the dark influence and power of Satan [2 Corinthians 4:4].
However, the greatest power belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Mark 5:9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
This unclean spirit has a name.
His name is Legion.
The word legion is used as a reference to the Roman military unit.
One legion has around 5,000 – 6,000 soldiers.
Many unclean spirits possessed this man.
Mark 5:10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
This unclean spirit asked the Lord Jesus Christ not to send him away.
Mark 5:11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
There are many pigs around that area as well.
Mark 5:12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
This unclean spirit asked the Lord Jesus Christ to send them to enter to those pigs.
Let us continue with [Mark 5:13].
Mark 5:13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
The Lord Jesus Christ allowed the unclean spirit to leave the man.
They went out and entered the pigs.
There were around two thousand pigs there.
Those pigs possessed by unclean spirits ran and jumped out of the cliff.
The act of self-suicidal is not natural, just like the act of cutting oneself.
It is of satanic influence.
Mark 5:14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
Mark 5:15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
After this event, people went into the city and told what just happened.
They came to the Lord Jesus Christ.
They also saw the man who was previously possessed by the devil.
This man sat down.
This man put on some clothes.
This man had his right mind.
The unclean spirit is no match with the power of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Mark 5:16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.
Mark 5:17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.
Likely, people saw the scene when the Lord Jesus Christ encountered an unclean spirit and cast it into those pigs.
These people did not want the Lord Jesus Christ to stay around there.
They prayed Him to leave this area.
The Lord answered their prayer.
He left them.
Mark 5:18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
The Lord Jesus Christ went to the ship for the next journey.
The man, who was possessed by an unclean spirit, came and asked to travel with Him.
This scene probably reminds many of you of the time when you first got saved.
All you want is to be with the Lord Jesus Christ.
You are so excited about the Bible.
You cannot wait to go to church.
You cannot wait to participate in the Bible study.
You join all other church activities.
Mark 5:19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
The Lord Jesus Christ did not allow this man to travel with Him.
However, He had a specific job for this man to do.
This is a practical and biblical approach when witnessing to other people.
It does not require any deep technique or to sound persuasive.
It does not require in-depth biblical knowledge.
Let us read it slowly.
… Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
Witnessing starts with those who are near us.
It starts with our friends.
How many great things the Lord Jesus Christ has done for you throughout the years?
How many times has He been kind and merciful to you?
How many times has He been patient with you?
How many times does He care for you?
Mark 5:20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
Who would believe that the man, who was previously possessed by an unclean spirit, can be used by God to preach for the glory of the Lord?
This man did just what the Lord Jesus Christ told him to do.
He told people how great things the Lord Jesus Christ has done for him.
No one is too far gone from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Tonight, He can still save anyone who would believe on Him.
