Good evening everyone.
Welcome to a midweek service.
Two weeks ago, we looked at a parable of a sower.
The Lord Jesus Christ used a parable to teach a spiritual application.
To understand a parable that He taught, we need to observe the word written in the Bible.
God would like us to know the truth.
He is the truth.
He promised to preserve the truth.
A saved believer is to be a sower.
We are to spread the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ everywhere.
We are not to be selective sharing the gospel.
This is because we will never know where the seed will land.
Honestly, we all would like the seed to land on the good ground.
It is our expectation.
When we submit to the truth taught by the Lord Jesus Christ, we know that not everyone will grow spiritually at the same rate.
The Lord Jesus Christ knows about this.
He said some would grow thirtyfold, some sixty and some one hundred.
As a church, our primary job remains the same that is to preach the word of God and teach the Bible to people.
That is all we can do, and we cannot force people to grow spiritually.
We will continue from verse 21.
Mark 4:21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
The Lord Jesus Christ used a simple thing in our daily life to teach a spiritual truth.
We all know what a candle is.
The place for a candle is a candlestick.
This is what we need to do with the candle.
We need to set it up on a candlestick.
It would be absurd to put a candle under a basket.
This will put out the candle.
This can make the basket be on fire.
You do not want to set your house on fire by putting the candle under a bed as well!
Mark 4:22 For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
Mark 4:23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
What is the context here?
Previously, the Lord Jesus Christ was talking about sowing seed.
That is to proclaim the word of God.
We are to tell the people about the Lord Jesus Christ.
Up to this point, we should know what to do with the word of God.
Do not just only keep it to yourself.
Ask God for His help, live it out, and share it with those around you.
The Lord warns us of three things we are to be careful when it comes to spiritual growth.
You need to be careful of the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things.
Next, let us read verses 24-25.
Mark 4:24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
Mark 4:25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
The context here is still about the word of God.
God would like us to know the truth.
When the truth from the Bible is presented, people either receive it with gladness or deny it.
If you will hear the word of God and respond properly to it, He will give you more.
If you stop hearing the word of God and respond appropriately to it, not only God stops giving the truth from His word, but what you already have will also begin to slip away.
Mark 4:26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
Mark 4:27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
We continue with a parable here.
This man sows a seed into the ground.
He goes to sleep and gets up to check out the seed, whether it has grown.
It wastes his effort.
This is because he cannot make a seed to grow.
He goes out the next day to see whether a seed is growing.
Again, he cannot make it grow.
Mark 4:28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
This passage shows the law of growth.
There are processes involved.
None begins fully mature and yields fruits immediately.
… first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
The Lord knows the right time when His children are to grow.
The Lord has a specific way to teach them.
Some are obedient and grow fruitfully than others.
Some are rebellious and learn the hard way.
What is the point of this parable?
… For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself. (verse 28)
… he knoweth not how. (verse 27)
The sower can plant the seed.
The sower can plant the seed into good ground.
When the fruit is ripe and ready, the sower can harvest and reap it.
However, he cannot make it grow!
He does not know how to make it grow.
What can we do then?
Sow the seed.
Preach the word of God.
Teach the Bible.
Do not try to force people to get saved.
Do not try to make people become spiritually mature Christians.
You do not know how!
The only person who can get people saved and can help them to grow spiritually is God.
Only the Lord knows how to do this.
The sower sows the seed and gets to reap the harvest.
You can sow the seed.
You can give the gospel tract.
You can preach the word.
You can lead people to Christ.
You cannot change anybody.
You cannot get down to people’s hearts and manipulate them to be a spiritual Christian.
Let the Holy Spirit do His work with this.
That is God’s job.
The Book of Galatians and chapter 6 makes it clears that the one who produces the “fruit of the Spirit” listed in [Galatians 6:22-23] is God the Holy Spirit.
Only He knows how to do that and so let us submit to the Bible and do what we are required to do.
We will end our lesson with verse 29.
Mark 4:29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.
One thing that is clear tonight is that we are all to be a sower.
We are to sow the seed everywhere.
Some of us get to reap.
It is a blessing.
Some of us have been witnessing but still see no results.
Do not give up.
That person, that loved one, that friend may not get saved today.
Do not put pressure on yourselves to get people saved.
We see what the Bible says tonight.
Let us be faithful and do our parts.
Keep preaching the word of God.
Keep giving the gospel tract.
Keep teaching the Bible.
Keep praying for the lost soul.
Then let God do what He knows best with how to save people’s souls and change their lives.
